Evaluation of a Pilot Program for Indigenous School Students

CareerTrackers is a non-for-profit that creates career pathways and support systems for young Indigenous adults to attend and graduate from university by linking students with employers through paid internships matching their career aspirations. CareerTrackers recently received funding to establish a pilot high school program to mentor Indigenous students in making important educational decisions such as selecting high school subjects that promote access to further education and choosing university degrees that align with their career ambitions. The program aimed to provide a “pipeline” of high school students entering the core university program.

The funding agreement required the organisation to determine if it was meeting its objectives and to identify potential program improvements. Nexus was commissioned to conduct this evaluation which involved a series of individual interviews with students, participant surveys and a focus group with CareerTrackers staff.

The evaluation found an impressive level of engagement with students and suggested the program was successful in encouraging Indigenous students to enroll in university. The evaluation made series of recommendations to strengthen the governance of the program and its links with the other CareerTrackers’ offerings.
