Evaluation of a Pilot Workplace Mental Health Program

The NSW Government delivered a series of workplace mental health initiatives as part of its Mentally Healthy Workplace Strategy, with a long-term vision to create mentally healthy workplaces across NSW through evidence informed programs.

The State Insurance Regulatory Authority delivered one of the initiatives under this strategy; a program in which peer workers are employed to provide phone-based support to people struggling with challenging emotions in the workplace.

Nexus was contracted to conduct a process evaluation of this pilot program to assess how peer style support can help staff with workplace mental health issues.  The evaluation methods involved analysis of administrative data and a series of surveys and follow-up interviews with the clients. The purpose was to gain some insights into whether and how peer support can assist people with workplace mental health issues. The evaluation identified key issues in the service utilisation and recommendations around promotional activities and a new marketing strategy.
